The Sky is Falling!

Originally posted Sept. 23, 2005

Every day at 11 a.m. we have an editors meeting via conference call. During this meeting, since we are a chain of newspapers, each paper pitches stories they think the other sites may be interested in. We also get a reading of the day's AP wire offerings...and I gotta say that today's digest left me feeling like the world is falling apart.

Don't believe me? Check out today's AP headlines:

-Hurricane Rita roars toward oil-and-chemical centers along Gulf Coast

-Levee breaks in New Orleans, swamps devastated neighborhood

-At least 24 killed in bus explosion during Houston's Rita evacuation

-Big change in U.S. bankruptcy law spurs a surge in filings

-Heavy fighting in Ramadi; two more U.S. soldiers reported killed

-Jeep filled with Hamas militants blows up at Gaza rally, 10 dead

Crap, what else?! Earthquake in CA? Tornado in Kansas? George W. fooling around with Monica Lewinsky?? And don't forget this week's N. Korea nuclear flip-flop. Not to mention that now it looks like Warren Beatty may challenge Arnold Schwarzenegger for the governorship. Bulworth vs. Terminator. There's just something so inherently wrong about that.

Not only that, but some completely deaf lady just called (twice) and forced me to scream my name into the phone so she could know who she's talking to.

That's it, the sky is falling.
