Bon Appetit, My Ass!

Originally posted April 20, 2006

So far, food has not been kind to me today. I am still battling 5 pounds that I want to lose, so I have been exercising before work most mornings. The 5 pounds hasn't gone away (although one could argue it's muscle gain), so I'm trying to eat better.

Thus, I packed myself a lunch this morning, consisting of a turkey sandwich (turkey, lite mayo, mustard, no cheese), an apple, a jug of water and a vitamin. Even though I was tired and lazy this morning, I forced myself to walk 25 minutes on the treadmill at a quick pace with maximum incline (very hard!).

I walked to work and resolved not to eat my lunch before 1 p.m. I have a tendency to get hungry around 11:30 a.m., and then I devour whatever I have and get hungry again in the early afternoon. So I'm hoping that eating later will keep me full until dinner.

Finally, 1 p.m. came and I happily dug into my sandwich. Until I had three bites that ruined it all. Yep, you guessed it...the mysterious hard things that turn up in deli turkey sometimes. Those three bites were completely unchewable. I spat them out and inspected the rest of my sandwich. It was fine, but not nearly as satisfying as before.

Then my co-worker brought in a little tub of See's chocolates. I decided to let myself have one, and only one. I carefully picked out a square one that looked like it might contain caramel, and made my way back to my desk. But when I bit into the chocolate, it was stale and hard. It indeed contained caramel, but it was like an adobe brick. Feh. Oh my gosh, now that I think of it...I hope that wasn't supposed to be toffee! In any case, it was too squishy to be toffee and too hard to be caramel. I shall call it toffamel.

Well, no matter, I still had an apple. I began to chew my way through a nice red one, until I hit a gigantic bruise inside that was not visible on the outside. Disappointed, I tossed the rest of the apple. Who wants to eat a gnarly bruise? Apparently food is not my biggest fan today.

I'm hoping to have spaghetti for dinner, but how many ways might that go wrong? Hmm.

Sigh...guess I'll go pop an expired Altoid.
