Why Are People Mean/Suck?
No, I don't have a specific incident that triggered this blog topic, but as I was on my walk today, I started thinking about how more and more it seems that people just aren't nice.
I mean, it doesn't matter how many good things you say or do, how much you go out of your way, how far you bend over backwards, how encouraging you try to be...people just end up sucking. Have you noticed that? And then it turns YOU mean sometimes, and perpetuates the cycle.
Why is it that people just don't seem receptive to a good deed or a kind word anymore? Sometimes you're met with a harsh comment, or at the very least you just get ignored. It's weird. I know when someone does something nice for me or gives me a compliment, I feel incredibly rude if I don't at least say "thank you" or return the favor, or pay it forward to someone else.
Anyway, I don't know why this seems to be a trend. People are hardened now or something. Too wrapped up in their daily stress? What's up?

I have a pay-it-forward story. I went to Costco optical and the sales woman was helping the person that came right before me. While it was buckwild at Costco b/c of some morning promo, the optical place was slow. The customer before me was this ittybitty teeny weeny woman. We'll call her "Grams." Grams didn't speak English very well. She took off her glasses and motioned that she would like Sales lady to take a look. Sales lady asked, "Do you need me to tighten the screw?" Grams nodded. Sales lady tightened screw. She could have just given them back to Grams but she wanted to make sure they fit well. She put them on Grams' face and realized, "Oh, the nose pads need to be adjusted too!" So she adjusted that and made sure that they fit just right on Grams' face. Because of the language barrier, Grams couldn't really express thanks. She just nodded and smiled really big when Sales lady put them back on her face and asked, "How's that?" Who knows if Grams even bought her glasses at Costco. But she left a happy Grams. Then Sales lady helped me fit the glasses I just bought and the glasses I was currently wearing. When I was all set to go, Sales lady told me to grab some complimentary breakfast. I looked at the long line and said, "No thanks!" Sales lady said she wanted to get herself a glass of orange juice but her coworker wouldn't be here for another 15 minutes and there probably wouldn't be any OJ there. I looked at the line and thought, "F*ck me." What I said was, "I can get you a glass of OJ. Be right back." And I did. Because Sales Lady was sooo nice to Grams. She deserved a glass of OJ. See? Pay it forward! :)
The hippy-dippy, artsy-farsty folk here are generally kind and courteous. It's almost Chip and Dale like- after you, not my friend after YOU. Not to be Pollyanna, but it's lovely.
